While some broadband customers have found their NBN connection to be a vast improvement compared to their previous internet connection, others have found that their NBN service is somewhat unsatisfactory. It's a bit of a common misunderstanding that there is one NBN service that promises to deliver the one fast speed; conversely, there are numerous different NBN plans, several different NBN speed tiers, and various different internet service providers that offer the NBN service. There are also different NBN connection types, some which work better than others; annoyingly, customers do not get to choose which NBN connection type they get, which can sometimes be the cause of their subpar NBN broadband performance.
Besides these important factors, there are also other variables that may affect the speed at which data travels between your internet connection and your devices. The time of day will often impact your internet speed; when everyone is using the internet at once, it can cause congestion and delays at once; this most frequently occurs between the hours of 7pm and 11pm, a bracket of time now referred to as the Typical Evening Speed times (internet service providers are now required to tell consumers in advance what each plan’s typical evening speeds are). Regardless of your NBN speed tier, your NBN connection type, and the time, NBN outages are not uncommon; they can be caused by tempestuous weather, or planned maintenance (you check the NBN network status at your connected address here).
Other factors to consider are how many people in your household are using the NBN service at once, as this too can cause congestion, and what sort of things your household is using the NBN service for; if your home or office needs to do a lot of streaming, uploading and downloading, and you’re experiencing an inconvenient level of lag, you might want to consider jumping up to a higher NBN speed tier. Simply put, you might be on an NBN plan that is, at best, not the right plan for you, or at worst - just a bad plan. It might be time to compare other NBN plans and NBN broadband providers that suit your needs and your location.
