Types of NBN connections in Collingwood

The NBN (National Broadband Network) service is now available across most areas of Collingwood. If you already have an active Collingwood NBN connection, you can compare Melbourne NBN plans here. If your Collingwood location hasn’t received its NBN upgrade yet, you can use the NBN rollout map below to find out when the NBN rollout is expected to be finished in your area.

The NBN is an Australian-wide initiative to update the country’s internet infrastructure that was designed and implemented by the Australian Government. The NBN aims to replace Australia’s old copperline-based internet infrastructure (which was a hand-me-down from the country’s old landline telephone networks) with a typically faster and more reliable fibre optic cable network. The NBN is currently an MTM (Multi Technology Mix) which means that there are various different NBN connection types made from different kinds of technologies. Some of the different NBN connection types found around Collingwood include  FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), FTTN (Fibre to the Node), HFC (Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial), FTTB (Fibre to the Basement), and Fixed Wireless. Unfortunately, some NBN connection types don’t work as well as others, and Austalians do not get to choose which one they get; this choice is made by the NBN Co based on location. However, you do still get quite a lot of options when it comes to selecting your NBN plan. Step 1 icon

Fibre to the premises / home

When the NBN project initially commenced, the government at the time intended to roll out fibre optic cabling all the way up to your home or business property. This type of connection is call Fibre to the premises/home

Step 2 icon

Fibre to the node

Mid-way through the NBN roll-out, a change in Government leadership saw some funding constraints which lead to a slightly different roll-out approach for the NBN. This approach involves an amalgamation of original copper systems and fibre optic systems. This is referred to as Fibre to the node (FTTN).

Step 2 icon

Fixed wireless connection

In some cases - particularly in remote locations - it would be impractical or too expensive to physically connect a property to the fibre-optic network. In such cases properties will be connected by a wireless network. This is referred to as a Fixed Wireless NBN connection.
