Types of NBN connections in South Yarra

As the NBN (National Broadband Network) is an enterprise designed and rolled out by the Australian Government with the aim to improve the country’s internet infrastructure service. It replaces Australia’s old copper line internet technology with a generally more reliable fibre optic cable service.  As the NBN is an MTM (Multi Technology Mix), it means that there are various different NBN connection types that are operating on different technologies, as opposed to the one standard NBN connection type. This is why some broadband users have experienced the NBN as being a definite upgrade to their home internet service, whereas others have seen it as a bit of step sideways (or in some cases, a step backwards). In a nutshell, this is because some NBN connection types don’t work as well as others; and sadly, Australians don’t get to choose what NBN connection type we are given, this is a decision made by the NBN Co, an unpopular policy informally known as the NBN Lottery. Some of the varied different NBN connection technologies found around South Yarra include Fixed Wireless, HFC (Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial), FTTB (Fibre to the Basement), FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), and FTTN (Fibre to the Node).

While you don’t get to choose what NBN connection type you are given, you still get to choose what kind of NBN plan you get, which includes your NBN speed tier, your NBN contact length, and your NBN monthly data amount (which can be an unlimited NBN data plan, if that’s what best suits you). If you already have the NBN, but you’re thinking of shopping around for a new and better NBN deal, you can compare the best South Yarra NBN plans and providers here. If you’re not sure if your area has completed its NBN upgrade, you can find out by scrolling down and entering your full address into our NBN rollout map below. Step 1 icon

Fibre to the premises / home

When the NBN project initially commenced, the government at the time intended to roll out fibre optic cabling all the way up to your home or business property. This type of connection is call Fibre to the premises/home

Step 2 icon

Fibre to the node

Mid-way through the NBN roll-out, a change in Government leadership saw some funding constraints which lead to a slightly different roll-out approach for the NBN. This approach involves an amalgamation of original copper systems and fibre optic systems. This is referred to as Fibre to the node (FTTN).

Step 2 icon

Fixed wireless connection

In some cases - particularly in remote locations - it would be impractical or too expensive to physically connect a property to the fibre-optic network. In such cases properties will be connected by a wireless network. This is referred to as a Fixed Wireless NBN connection.
