Types of NBN connections in Wangaratta
The NBN - short for the National Broadband Network - is an Australian government implemented operation that was built to upgrade the country’s internet infrastructure and provide Australia with a faster and more effective broadband service. This is achieved by replacing the nation’s older internet infrastructure (which is a copper line network left over from our old landline telephone lines) with a quicker and generally more reliable fibre optic cable system.
The NBN service is now available in many areas of Wangaratta, and you can compare the best Wangaratta NBN plans and providers here. If you are not sure if your Wangaratta home has yet been upgraded to the NBN, you can scroll down and use our free NBN rollout map below. Be sure to enter your full and accurate address for full and accurate results. If your residence is not yet ready for the NBN, the rollout map should still be able to tell you roughly when the NBN Co will complete their NBN rollout in your area. Regardless of your home’s current NBN status, you should still be able to find out what NBN connection type has been allocated to your home. The NBN is a Multi Technology Mix (often shortened to “MTM”); this means that there is no standard NBN connection type, but rather, several different NBN connection types that are made from different technologies. The different kinds of NBN connection types found around Wangaratta include FTTB (Fibre to the Basement), FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), HFC (Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial), Fixed Wireless, and FTTN (Fibre to the Node).
Due to these different technologies, some NBN connections work better than others, but regrettably, NBN customers do not get to choose what NBN connection they are given; this choice is made for us by the NBN Co, and your NBN connection type will be designated to you based on where you live. If you are assigned one of the lesser NBN connection types, it doesn’t mean you can’t select an NBN deal that has unlimited NBN data, or one that is on a higher NBN speed tier. You may also wish to see if your home or office is compatible with an alternate form of home broadband, such as Home Wireless.
Fibre to the premises / home
When the NBN project initially commenced, the government at the time intended to roll out fibre optic cabling all the way up to your home or business property. This type of connection is call Fibre to the premises/home
Fibre to the node
Mid-way through the NBN roll-out, a change in Government leadership saw some funding constraints which lead to a slightly different roll-out approach for the NBN. This approach involves an amalgamation of original copper systems and fibre optic systems. This is referred to as Fibre to the node (FTTN).
Fixed wireless connection
In some cases - particularly in remote locations - it would be impractical or too expensive to physically connect a property to the fibre-optic network. In such cases properties will be connected by a wireless network. This is referred to as a Fixed Wireless NBN connection.
