Types of NBN connections in Macedon Ranges

The National Broadband Network (more commonly known as the NBN) is a countrywide upgrade to Australia’s internet infrastructure. This is chiefly achieved by replacing the country’s old copper line based internet infrastructure with a typically more efficient fibre optic cable network. The NBN is a Multi Technology Mix (which is frequently shortened and referred to as an “MTM”); this means that rather than having one standard kind of NBN connection, there are instead a variety of different NBN connection types that are made from different technologies.

As such, there are several types of NBN connections found around the Macedon Ranges, including HFC (Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial), FTTN (Fibre to the Node), FTTB (Fibre to the Basement), FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), Fixed Wireless, and in the more remote areas, NBN Sky Muster Satellite Service. Some NBN connection types are known to be less reliable than others, but unfortunately, NBN customers don’t get to choose what NBN connection type they receive, but they do get to select their NBN data plan and their NBN speed tier. If you already have active Macedon Ranges NBN service, you can compare the best Macedon Ranges NBN plans and providers here. If you’re unsure when your area is expected to receive an NBN upgrade, you can scroll down and enter your address into Compare Broadband’s free rollout map below.

Step 1 icon

Fibre to the premises / home

When the NBN project initially commenced, the government at the time intended to roll out fibre optic cabling all the way up to your home or business property. This type of connection is call Fibre to the premises/home

Step 2 icon

Fibre to the node

Mid-way through the NBN roll-out, a change in Government leadership saw some funding constraints which lead to a slightly different roll-out approach for the NBN. This approach involves an amalgamation of original copper systems and fibre optic systems. This is referred to as Fibre to the node (FTTN).

Step 2 icon

Fixed wireless connection

In some cases - particularly in remote locations - it would be impractical or too expensive to physically connect a property to the fibre-optic network. In such cases properties will be connected by a wireless network. This is referred to as a Fixed Wireless NBN connection.
