Both suburbs are young, with mostly rentals. Both the Brunswick postcode and Brunswick East postcode are apartment-heavy, which changes what you should look for in a plan. What this means for your internet:
- Half of Brunswick East homes are flats or apartments, so your building's wiring often sets your top speed.

Brunswick was one of five mainland first release sites for the nbn®. The nbn® FTTP upgrade construction started there in October 2010 (NBN Co 2010a; NBN Co 2010b).
That first rollout covered only part of Brunswick. Other streets in both suburbs were connected later using a mix of technologies and is now ready for upgrade.

Free nbn® fibre upgrades
If your home is on FTTN or FTTC, you may be able to switch to full fibre for free. Older terraces and houses in both suburbs are the homes most likely to still be on copper.
- More than 99% of the roughly 600,000 remaining FTTN premises across Australia will be able to complete the nbn® FTTP upgrade by December 2030 (NBN Co 2026c).
- FTTC homes no longer need a high-speed plan to order the upgrade (NBN Co 2026b).
- From July 2027, NBN Co will start notifying selected homes and businesses on legacy copper that they need to move to fibre. Copper services without an upgrade order may be suspended from January 2028, as a last resort (NBN Co 2026a).
- Apartment buildings go through a separate NBN Co program for complex multi-dwelling properties (NBN Co 2026b), so talk to your body corporate.
- Renters will usually need the property owner's OK before the installer comes out.

Choosing the right nbn® speed
On FTTP or HFC, nbn® 500 is now the starting point for fast plans. On FTTN, FTTC or FTTB, nbn® 100 is the practical ceiling. NBN Co lifted the old nbn® 100 tier to 500/50 Mbps on FTTP and HFC from 14 September 2025 (NBN Co 2024).

Upload speed matters if you work from home. nbn® 500 gives up to 50 Mbps upload, and nbn® 1000 now gives up to 100 Mbps (NBN Co 2024). Learn the difference between upload and download speeds before you pick a tier. You might find that the cost of one tier to the next is minimal but you get better value in your connection.

5G home internet as an alternative
5G home internet is an option at some addresses. It runs on a mobile network instead of the nbn®, and coverage varies by building. Thick brick walls in Brunswick's older terraces can weaken the signal indoors.
