Two Sydney households can pay different amounts for broadband or have access to different speed tiers, even when they live in the same suburb. An apartment in the CBD, an established home in the Inner West and a newer property in Western Sydney may have different connection technologies and equipment requirements.

If you work from home, make regular video calls or have several people streaming at once, check the provider's typical evening download speed and advertised upload speed too. These can be more useful than comparing headline download speeds alone.

What plan speed does your Sydney household need?

There's no single internet speed that suits every Sydney household. Someone living alone in a studio apartment in Surry Hills will generally have different requirements from a family of five in Parramatta, particularly if several people are streaming, gaming or working from home at the same time.

For lighter internet use, including browsing, emails, video calls and occasional streaming, an nbn® 25 or nbn® 50 plan may be enough. Households with several connected devices and more simultaneous activity may benefit from nbn® 100 or a faster plan, depending on their connection technology.

Think about when your household uses the internet most. If you're working remotely during the day while other family members are streaming or gaming in the evening, you'll want a plan that comfortably handles both. Video calls and cloud backups also depend on upload performance, not just download speed.

Choosing an nbn® speed tier is only part of the picture. The speeds you experience at your Sydney address can also depend on your connection technology, your provider's network performance and how your home Wi-Fi is set up.

For example, an older apartment in Sydney's Inner West may have thick walls that weaken the Wi-Fi signal between rooms. In a larger home in Western Sydney, a router positioned at one end of the property might struggle to provide consistent coverage throughout the house. In both cases, upgrading to a faster internet plan won't necessarily solve the problem.

What connection type does your Sydney address have?

Sydney's mix of older homes, high-rise apartments, townhouses and new developments means broadband connections can vary considerably between properties.

An apartment in Sydney's CBD might use Fibre to the Building (FTTB), while a detached home elsewhere in the city could have Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), Fibre to the Node (FTTN), Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC). These are examples of possible connections, not suburb-wide coverage patterns.

Unlike your internet provider, your existing nbn® connection technology isn't something you can usually choose when signing up. It depends on the infrastructure servicing your property, although some addresses qualify for an upgrade.

Key nbn® connection types in Sydney

Addresses previously on FTTN may be eligible for a free upgrade to FTTP under the upgrade program. Check your FTTP upgrade eligibility before selecting a plan. Upgrading to full fibre opens up higher speed tiers at no infrastructure cost.

How to switch nbn® providers in Sydney

Switching nbn® providers in Sydney is generally straightforward if your home already has an active connection. In many cases, the new provider can arrange the transfer remotely, without requiring a technician to visit.

• Once you've chosen a provider, confirm the activation date and whether you need to contact your existing provider to cancel. Don't assume your old service will automatically close without checking, as this could leave you paying for two plans.
• If you're moving between Sydney suburbs, the process may be different. Your new home could have another connection technology or use a private fibre network rather than nbn®. A property that has never been connected may also need installation work or additional fees.
• Before switching, check for outstanding modem payments, equipment return requirements and any contract exit fees. If you rely on your connection for work, consider arranging the changeover at a time when a short interruption would be manageable.
