The NBN (which stands for National Broadband Network) is Multi Technology Mix (also referred to as an “MTM”) which essentially means that there are several different NBN connection types made up of different technologies. Some NBN connections work better than others, but unfortunately, we don’t get to choose what kind of NBN connection we receive. Some of the different NBN connection types found around Parkes include Fixed Wireless, HFC (Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial), FTTB (Fibre to the Basement), FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), and FTTN (Fibre to the Node). During the early days of the NBN’s rollout, the initial plan was for fibre optic cables to run directly into every home, but after a change in Federal Government, this was considered too expensive, and the subsequent budget cuts resulted in the NBN system we currently have. However, after the 2020 Coronavirus lockdowns caused millions of Australians to work from home, the unreliable NBN connections became even more noticeably cumbersome, and the same government has since announced a $3.5 billion dollar plan to upgrade two million homes to fibre-to-the-home connections by 2023.

Fibre to the premises / home
When the NBN project initially commenced, the government at the time intended to roll out fibre optic cabling all the way up to your home or business property. This type of connection is call Fibre to the premises/home

Fibre to the node
Mid-way through the NBN roll-out, a change in Government leadership saw some funding constraints which lead to a slightly different roll-out approach for the NBN. This approach involves an amalgamation of original copper systems and fibre optic systems. This is referred to as Fibre to the node (FTTN).

Fixed wireless connection
In some cases - particularly in remote locations - it would be impractical or too expensive to physically connect a property to the fibre-optic network. In such cases properties will be connected by a wireless network. This is referred to as a Fixed Wireless NBN connection.
