The NBN (National Broadband Network) is an Australian-wide initiative to update the country’s internet infrastructure that’s designed and implemented by the Australian Government and overseen by a government body called the NBN Co. As the NBN is a Multi Technology Mix (MTM), it means that there are several different kinds of NBN connection types rather than the one standard type. Some of the different NBN connection types found around New South Wales are FTTB (Fibre to the Basement), FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), Fixed Wireless, HFC (Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial),and FTTN (Fibre to the Node), and in the more rural areas, NBN Sky Muster Satellite Service. These different NBN connection types run on different technologies, which means that some NBN connection types work a bit better than others; but unfortunately, as customers, we don’t get to decide which NBN connection type is installed in our homes. This choice is made for you by the NBN Co, and it’s a decision that’s made based on the location of your home or office, an unpopular policy informally dubbed the NBN Lottery. That said, while Australian NBN customers don’t get to choose their NBN connection types, they do still get to choose the finer details of their NBN plans; this means you have quite a bit of choice when it comes to selecting your NBN speed, your NBN data amount, your NBN contract, and how much you want to spend on your NBN plan per month.
Fibre to the premises / home
When the NBN project initially commenced, the government at the time intended to roll out fibre optic cabling all the way up to your home or business property. This type of connection is call Fibre to the premises/home
Fibre to the node
Mid-way through the NBN roll-out, a change in Government leadership saw some funding constraints which lead to a slightly different roll-out approach for the NBN. This approach involves an amalgamation of original copper systems and fibre optic systems. This is referred to as Fibre to the node (FTTN).
Fixed wireless connection
In some cases - particularly in remote locations - it would be impractical or too expensive to physically connect a property to the fibre-optic network. In such cases properties will be connected by a wireless network. This is referred to as a Fixed Wireless NBN connection.
