Types of NBN connections in Edgecliff

The Australian NBN (National Broadband Network) service is now rolled out and activated in many areas of the country, including most regions of Edgecliff. The NBN is a upgrade to our national internet infrastructure, which, simply put, replaces our old copper line based internet infrastructure - which is a hand-me-down from our old telephone landline network - and replaces it with a generally more reliable fibre optic cable network. The NBN is also a Multi Technology Mix (more commonly referred to as an “MTM”), which means that instead of there being one standard NBN connection type, there are multiple versions that are all built to operate on varying technologies. Some of the different NBN connection types found around Edgecliff and its surrounding New South Wales areas include  Fixed Wireless, HFC (Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial), FTTB (Fibre to the Basement), FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), and FTTN (Fibre to the Node); in some of the more regional areas, an NBN Sky Muster Satellite Service connection type might be required, though this is typically only needed in more rural regions. Regrettably, customers do not get to choose what NBN connection type is installed in their home; the NBN Co (the government body in charge of building and maintaining the NBN) allocates different NBN connection types to different areas based on location. This is a bit of a problem for some given that some NBN connection types don’t work quite as well as others - it is a policy that has since been derisively referred to as the NBN Lottery by both press and public alike. However, while customers do not get to choose their NBN connection type, they do have a considerable amount of choice when selecting their NBN plan.

Step 1 icon

Fibre to the premises / home

When the NBN project initially commenced, the government at the time intended to roll out fibre optic cabling all the way up to your home or business property. This type of connection is call Fibre to the premises/home

Step 2 icon

Fibre to the node

Mid-way through the NBN roll-out, a change in Government leadership saw some funding constraints which lead to a slightly different roll-out approach for the NBN. This approach involves an amalgamation of original copper systems and fibre optic systems. This is referred to as Fibre to the node (FTTN).

Step 2 icon

Fixed wireless connection

In some cases - particularly in remote locations - it would be impractical or too expensive to physically connect a property to the fibre-optic network. In such cases properties will be connected by a wireless network. This is referred to as a Fixed Wireless NBN connection.
